English Stars - Comprehension
Why were such dark colours used for the ocean and sky?
Why do you think the characters have bright-coloured clothing?
Why do you think the image was designed with the characters in the background and the ocean in the foreground?
CharactersJOEY: An 11-year-old boy, confident, fit and athletic.
SHANE: Joey’s best friend, also aged 11; smaller and not as confident as Joey.
MADDY: Joey’s 14-year-old sister.
(A rocky ledge on the edge of an ocean, present day. JOEY and SHANE are fishing from the edge of the rocks. MADDY is sitting near a large tackle box, watching the boys. A large coil of rope lies nearby.)
MADDY:
(teasing) You call yourselves fishermen! We’ve been here an hour and you haven’t even caught a cold!
SHANE:
Go away, Maddy!
JOEY:
Just ignore her, Shane. Don’t let her spoil this terrific day. All I want to do is relax in the sunshine and spend some time with my best mate.
SHANE:
And maybe catch a fish or two! What sort of fish d’ya reckon might be out there?
JOEY:
Dunno. Maybe bream, whiting, trevally …
MADDY:
(laughing) Maybe a thong, goggles, seaweed …
JOEY:
(ignoring MADDY) Mum will be really surprised when we bring our catch home. She’s at work and doesn’t even know we’ve gone fishing.
SHANE:
(reeling in his line) I’m not getting any bites. I’ll try throwing my line in over there.(SHANE exits.)
MADDY:
It’s getting very windy. Look at those dark clouds!
JOEY:
Yeah. We’ll give it another half an hour and then we’ll head home. (JOEY looks around, confused.) Hey! Where’s Shane?(Both MADDY and JOEY rush towards the edge of the stage.)
MADDY:
There he is! He’s been swept off the rock! Joey! He’s struggling!
JOEY:
(loudly) Shane! Shane! Hold on!
MADDY:
(panicking) What can we do? What can we do? This is just like what happened to Dad.
JOEY:
Stop it, Maddy. You run to those people over there on the beach. Hopefully they’ve got a phone to ring 000. I’ll stay here.(MADDY exits to find help.)
SHANE:
(off stage) Help me, Joey! Help me!
JOEY:
(muttering) He’s not gonna save himself. I’ve got to do something.(JOEY quickly empties the tackle box and ties a long rope around it. He holds one end of the rope and then throws the box off stage.)
JOEY:
Hold on to the box, Shane! I’ll tow you back in.(With all his might, JOEY tugs on the rope. At last, SHANE reappears, holding on to the box. He is soaking wet. They both lie down, exhausted. MADDY enters.)
MADDY:
I found someone who had a phone. The ambulance is coming. (pause) Next time, wear life jackets when you’re fishing off rocks!
